Children with learning disabilities such as autism face challenges in generating suitable and optimal solutions to problems. In this way, the article analyzes the design problem including the needs and preferences of children with ASD and their parents during confinement in terms of dependence and adaptability develops a design method for interactive and smart products focused on children with ASD in confinement situations and validates this method in a case study, in which a robot is developed that makes it easier for children with ASD to follow a routine.Īutism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) refers to a group of life-long conditions that are characterized by qualitative impairments in social interactions, problem solving and constructive skills. This work develops a method for the design of assistive technology and smart products to support children with ASD in following a routine and managing tasks autonomously. Thus, the need to have tools that help parents reconcile work with the care of these children, who have low autonomy, is reinforced. These changes have led to more frequent and intense behavioral problems, causing stress, anxiety, and confusion for these children and their families. This new reality will require new strategies to improve family and work conciliation, which is especially challenging for families with children suffering from psychological pathologies such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Most apps were placed in the “recommendable” level but with margin for improvement in increasing their functionality.ĬOVID-19 has posed new physical and mental challenges for the population worldwide, establishing social and structural changes in the labor market that could be maintained and implemented permanently. However, 98.06% of the apps worked on several areas, which makes them more functional but with the downside of not being specialized. We found that the focus of most apps was on executive functions, language and entertainment, with a minority devoted to the emotional sphere or time management. Having evaluated the recorded data, we calculated frequencies, percentages and reliability, as well as parametric contrast and correlation statistics. We determined which work area each app developed, as well as which were the most multifaceted.

Through a previously validated system of indicators, 155 free apps on Google Play were evaluated, using “autism” in English and in Spanish.
For a group with such particular needs, a review of the apps is great importance, since, due to their characteristics, the apps must provide content, design and pedagogical aspects that fit those needs. Many professionals and families include these resources in the education and therapy of children with autism. Mobile apps represent a resource with great potential for encouraging the development of many skills, given the high number of apps available and the quick access to them.
